There have been three fires in North Dakota's oil patch since the beginning of June -- and it's highlighting the threat lightning poses to those operations.

In each case -- tanks that store the toxic saltwater that's used in drilling were to blame -- not the wells or rigs. 

North Dakota doesn't require companies to install lightning protections at the storage and disposal sites.
