Democratic nominee for North Dakota Tax Commissioner wants to end what he calls the senior citizen tax
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The democratic nominee for North Dakota tax commissioner says he wants to end what he calls the senior citizen tax.
Jason Astrup says if elected, he'll provide an income tax exclusion for social security benefits that are taxable on federal tax returns.
North Dakota is one of only 13 states that taxes social security benefits received.
With a growing senior citizen population, Astrup says it will provide real tax relief to seniors living on fixed incomes.
Jason Astrup/(D) Tax Commissioner Candidate: “Taxing social security benefits is nothing more than a tax on senior citizens that hits the very people who worked a lifetime contributing to our state's prosperity.”
Astrup is challenging incumbent tax commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger in the November election.
