Woman says 'Alexa' recorded her conversation
SEATTLE, WA (KIRO) -- People across the country are now questioning whether their smart speakers are recording them. A couple in Portland, Oregon said their Amazon 'Alexa' device did just that.
Danielle, who only wanted to go by her first name, said 'Alexa' sent recordings of a conversation between her and her husband to one of her husband's employees in Seattle. That's about 176 miles away.
At first, they didn't believe it, but the employee explained exactly what they had been talking about, and that's when Danielle said reality sank in.
"I felt invaded! Like total privacy invasion. Like immediately I'm like, I'm never plugging that device in again, I can't trust it," Danielle said.
Amazon said in a statement that it "Takes privacy very seriously. We investigated what happened and determined this was an extremely rare occurrence." The statement went on to say "We are taking steps to avoid this from happening in the future."
The husband's employee was in the family's contact list. Danielle said Amazon didn't explain what exactly happened.
